Understand the new Sustainable Tourism Tax (TTS) in Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande
The City of Angra dos Reis has announced new adjustments to the Viva Angra – Digital Tourism System (SDT), an initiative that will regulate tourism control in the municipality and on Ilha Grande more broadly.
The new rules of the Sustainable Tourism Tax (TTS) take effect on June 1, 2026 and were defined after meetings between the city government, TurisAngra, tourism trade representatives and city council members.
The municipality's aim is to create a more organized model to monitor the flow of visitors, invest in tourism infrastructure and contribute to the region's environmental preservation — especially during high season, when the number of people circulating on Ilha Grande significantly exceeds the local population.

Tax, "entry fee" or "toll" of Ilha Grande: are they all the same thing?

In practice, these popular names all refer to the same charge: the Sustainable Tourism Tax (TTS) of Angra dos Reis. It's not a road toll nor a federal tax — it's a municipal tourist tax, currently charged to those who visit the region (today, R$ 50 per person, for up to 30 days). What changes in practice?
The main change announced is the unification of the tourist tax. Now, tourists who visit both the mainland and the islands will pay a single amount of:

According to the City government, the change seeks to simplify the charge and make it easier for visitors to understand.
According to Rodrigo Gouvea, president of TurisAngra, the amount represents approximately R$ 1.66 per day of stay in the city.
Rules for those boarding in other cities
Another important point involves tourists who reach the Angra islands on boats departing from other points, such as Conceição de Jacareí or Mangaratiba.
In these cases:

the visitor will pay R$ 50.00 if they prove a minimum stay of two days in legalized lodging in Angra dos Reis;

without that proof, the tax will be R$ 100.00.
According to the city, the measure aims to encourage regularized lodging and strengthen the local economy.
Day use will have promotional rules
Visitors who take only one-day tours (“day use”) will also have specific rules during the system's first year of implementation.
Boarding from Angra dos Reis
Those boarding at the Santa Luzia Station will pay:

promotional rate valid between June 1, 2026 and June 1, 2027.
Boarding in another municipality
Day-use tourists departing from other cities may pay:

Who remains exempt from the tax?
Exemptions remain in place for:

children up to 12;

people with disabilities;

What is Viva Angra?
Viva Angra is the new Digital Tourism System created by the City to control the flow of visitors and gather data on tourism in the municipality.
According to official information, the system will include:

a public transparency panel with tourism and revenue data.
The initiative began testing in April 2026 and has been undergoing constant adjustments since then.
Why is this tax being created?
